The International Working Conference on Stored Product Protection (IWCSPP) is one of the most important conferences about pest control and quality management of stored grains and processed foods.
Every 4 years scientist all over the world get together and show the results of their studies. The 11th version of this conferences was held on Thailand (November 2014). In there, Fosfoquim exposed about the Fumigation of non gas-tight buildings and horizontal structures using continuous phosphine injection.
In this opportunity, our Phosphine Business Area Manager, Mr. Miguel Rogers, presented a talk about the latest technological developments related to phosphine fumigations using the Horn Diluphos System, specifically about continuous phosphine injection for non gas-tight structures.
Old buildings, mills and warehouses were not conceived to hold gas throughout a fumigation process, and the cost of sealing these structures is very high. Using traditional phosphine fumigation techniques on these facilities lead to poor mortality results, as it is not possible to maintain the required phosphine concentrations throughout the fumigation process, increasing the chances for the insects to become more tolerant to phosphine.
By using the Horn Diluphos System technology together with pure phosphine, it is possible to continuously inject low phosphine concentrations during the exposure period, overcoming the leakage rate of the structure, being able to maintain the required concentration to effectively kill the insect.
The natural leakage rate of a facility might vary during the fumigation process, influebced by external conditions as strong winds or temperature changes. To overcome this situation, the Horn Diluphos System units can communicate with electronic real time phosphine monitors, adjusting the amount of gas to be added accordingly to the specific fumigation conditions, optimizing the use of gas and labor required to complete the fumigation.
